Centaurea leptophylla (K. Koch) TchichIn Flora of Turkey, no sectional position was assignedfor Centaurea leptophylla due to some deficiencies inthe specimen. For this reason, Centaurea leptophylla wasexamined in detail under a stereomicroscope to completedescriptive deficiencies concerning achene and pappusfeatures. Based on these features, we suggest a taxonomic position, as well as characterizing itschromosomes in the present research.Centaurea leptophylla can be recognized by its slen-der prostrate stems and fairly reduced simple appendages.According to our examination, the achene characteristicscan be described as: achenes narrowly ovoid-oblong,4.5–5 × 2.2–2.5 mm, superficially with sparsely pilosehairy and pappus double, deciduous, creamish-brown;inner up to 0.5 mm in one series, with scaly hairs, outer8–10 mm in multiple series, with barbellate hairs. The last molecular studies reported that the status ofthe section Pseudoseridia is highly controversial (Garcia-Jacas et al. 2006; Uysal et al. 2012) and not resolvedyet.

Because of this, we adopt the current position of thissection in the Flora of Turkey (Wagenitz 1975). On theother hand, the precise taxonomic status of C. lepto-phylla was not determined by any paper until now. Therefore, according to the complementary description,we suggest that the species should be placed within thePseudoseridia because of the similarity its appendageshape and achene features. The chromosome number and morphology are firstreported in this paper. Its chromosome number is 2n=4x=36 (Figure 1B). The karyotype formula and AI aredetermined as 4m + 5sm and 2.46, respectively. Other kary-otype parameters and asymmetries are given in Table 2.
